Linking to a Web Address from Inside an Article

Glossary  Return to Start  Previous  Next

There are two ways to link to an Internet address (URL) in an Article Window: active links or hypertext links.

In general, if the explicit URL itself appears within the text of your article, it becomes a clickable link which is called an active link. To create an implicit link to a URL from any arbitrary text in your article, use hypertext links.

To use either type of link, first:

Make sure that the Article Window is open.

If the Article Window is not open, double-click on the article's title in the Titles column of the Index Window. Refer to the procedure for Entering New Information to create a new article.

Click on the location in the Article Content area of the window where you want to put the link.

To Create an Active Link

Type a valid Internet address.

The text that you type is the active link to that URL.

To Create a Hypertext Link

Select the Insert Hypertext Link command from the Edit menu.

The Hypertext Link Properties dialog box is displayed.

In the Link Text field, type the text label that will appear in your article's content to identify the link.

If you used the Insert Hypertext Link command with a string of text selected, that text is displayed as the default Link Text.

In the Link Type box, click on the Internet Address option.

In the Target field, type a valid Internet address.

Select the OK button.

A hypertext link to this URL in inserted in your article at the cursor location.

Valid Internet Addresses

Any text string starting with a valid URL prefix is treated as a Internet address link. For a list of the valid URL prefixes, click here.

Clicking on most link types opens your default Web browser and sends the URL to it. Clicking on a mailto: URL should open your e-mail client application.
