File Properties Dialog Box:  Articles

Glossary  Return to Start

Customizes settings for the articles and attachments in the current data file. To save your settings, select the OK button.

This dialog box is displayed when you select the File Properties Command (File Menu).

Word Wrap

If this box is checked, the article text in Article Windows for new articles wraps so that all text is displayed. Otherwise, the text only appears on the next line after an Enter character. Turning off this option can be useful to force tables of data to appear in columns.

To set the Word Wrap property for existing articles, use the Article Properties Command (Article Menu).

Automatically Update Article Dates to Modification Dates

If this box is checked, each article's date is automatically updated to the current date whenever the article is modified. Otherwise, the date only changes when you explicitly edit it or if you select the Set to Current Date and Time Command (Article Menu).

Locations for Targets of Relative Links

By default, article attachments, active links, and hypertext links to external file name and folder targets use full absolute path names to exact file locations.

Alternatively, you can specify a file or folder name in a Target field without a complete path name. If a full path name is not included in a file target, Personal Knowbase locates your linked files relative to the folder specified in this section.

Select how you want to locate relative paths for this data file:

Use default Attachments location from Preferences  - This option locates all incomplete file links relative to the folder specified on the Files tab of the Preferences Dialog Box as the Attachments location.

This option allows you to move your entire Attachments folder and all its files, then to only change the Preferences option to relocate all file links using relative links.

Use current file's location - This option locates all incomplete file links relative to the folder where the current data file is located.

This option allows you to move your data file and all its attachments together and, as long as the subfolder structure is identical within that folder, to relocate all file links using relative links.

Specify path - This option specifies an arbitrary path for locating all incomplete file links.

This option allows you to move the files linked from this data file to any folder and change the folder for relative links arbitrarily. This can be useful, for example, for linking to files on a mapped network drive whose drive letter could change.

Note for portable installations:  The Specify Path option always uses an exact folder. If you are running Personal Knowbase from a portable device, this option will not adjust to be relative to the portable drive. When using relative paths in conjunction with portable drives, we recommend using one of the first two options above for locating relative links.

Location

Regardless of which setting is used for the location of relative links, the exact selected location is shown at the bottom of the section. As you switch among the above options, the actual path that the currently selected option refers to is shown here.

NOTE:Use relative links with caution and planning, since changing your relative link option above can break every incomplete file link in your data file.

NOTE:For a more detailed discussion of relative paths with examples, see About File Links and Relative Paths.

Save full pathnames for new file or folder targets

Your setting for this property here in File Properties is used as the default for the corresponding property for all new articles created in this data file.

When this checkbox is checked, complete path names are stored for attachments and hypertext links for all new articles.

When this setting is unchecked, Personal Knowbase automatically omits the full path name whenever the path is equal to the currently set relative path as specified above.

To set the Save full pathnames for new file or folder targets property for an existing article, use Attachments tab of the Article Properties Dialog Box or from any Hypertext Link Properties Dialog Box for a link in that article.
