Following are some of our most frequently asked questions and answers:

Personal Knowbase Features

1.   How do I open multiple Knowbase files at once?

You can have as many copies of Personal Knowbase open at once as you need, each viewing a different Knowbase file.

Note, however, that if you make changes to the user preferences in one copy, it won't affect other copies. The last copy of the program to be closed determines which preferences and window locations are saved.

2.   What is the difference among article attachments, active links, and hypertext links?

Attachments, active links, and hypertext links are all ways to link from an article to an external object, such as an Internet address (URL), an email address, or a disk file or folder.

An attachment links an article to an external object which is not part of the text of the article. Specify attachments with the Article Properties command (Article Menu). To open attachments, select the Open Attachments command (Article menu) or press F5.

An active link is part of the text of the article which is an explicit link to an external object. It is embedded within the text of the article, and you can have any number of active links within an article. To open an active link, double-click on the text of the link.

A hypertext link is part of the text of the article which is an implicit link to an external object. The hypertext link can link any arbitrary text in your article in an external object. You can have any number of hypertext links within an article. This is the only type of links which can link to another Knowbase article. To open a hypertext link, double-click on the link's text.

For more information about attachments, see About Article Attachments.

For more information about active links, see About Active Links in Article Windows.

For more information about hypertext links, see About Hypertext Links in Article Windows.

3.   I want to import a file type which is not listed in the Import dialog box.

One option is to convert your file into one of the file formats that is listed. For example, most word processing programs can convert text into RTF format.

If your file is a formatted text file, another option is to create a custom import format. For more information about the custom import format feature, see Importing from a Custom Format Text File.

Personal Knowbase also supports importing articles from custom file formats using plug-ins. Please see Import Plug-Ins.

4.   What files do I need to back up to protect my Personal Knowbase data?

Please see the procedure for Backing Up and Restoring Data Files.

5.   How do I move Personal Knowbase to a new computer?

Please see the procedure for Moving Personal Knowbase to a New Computer.

System Compatibility

6.   Is Personal Knowbase multi-user capable on a network?

This version of Personal Knowbase is not multi-user capable. You can put the Knowbase data file on a network, but only one user can access the file at once. If another user tried to access the file, they would simply be told that the file was already in use.

Ordering and Registration

7.   My registration key doesn't work. What should I do?

The registration key is encoded to the user name. It should work on any computer.

Here are some tips for entering the key:

Make sure to enter the user name exactly as we send it to you. One common error is omitting or adding a middle initial. Capitalization is not important, but diacritical marks are.

Try copying and pasting the information directly from the email message we send you into the Registration Information dialog box. Simply highlight the text from the email and press Ctrl+C, then place the mouse cursor in the corresponding slot in the dialog box and press Ctrl+V to paste.

When pasting the registration key, you can place the cursor in any one of the five boxes provided. When you paste the key, it will automatically be distributed to the correct boxes.

If the registration key still won't work, you may want to re-install the software or even re-download it. This is just in case the software was corrupted in some way.

If you continue to have problems, contact us. Please include your registration user name in your message so that we can try to reproduce your problem.

8.   I ordered Personal Knowbase but haven't received my registration key. What should I do?

We send your registration key by email within 24 hours of receiving your order, usually within minutes.

Possible reasons for a delay are:

We never received your order.
The email address we have for you is incorrect.
The email address we have for you bounces or returns an error.
Our email to you is being filtered as spam by your ISP or email software.

First, please check your email's spam filters, which often trap valid emails, especially receipts and registration information, which are in fact commercial email.

If you think it's been too long since your order, and you haven't heard from us, please contact us and let us know! Send us the name under which you ordered the software, your email address, the date of your order, and the method by which you ordered (check, credit card, by web, by phone, etc).

If we are unable to contact you by email within 2 days of your contacting us, we will send your registration information by postal mail.
