Compact Command (File Menu)

Glossary  Return to Start  Previous  Next

Compacts and repairs an existing data file. Over time, Personal Knowbase data files can become large. This command reduces the data file to its minimum size. It is not available if any data file is open. Use the Close Command (File Menu) to close any open data file.

Two dialog boxes are displayed. The first is the Compact Which File Dialog Box, where you select which file to compact. The second is the Save Compacted File As Dialog Box, where you select a name for the resulting file. If the same name is selected in both dialog boxes, a backup file of the original data file is created. This file has the same name as the original file, but with the extension BAK.

If keywords are found during the compaction which are not in use by any articles, Personal Knowbase asks you if you want to delete these keywords.

Repairing Damaged Data Files

This command also attempts to repair a data file which has been damaged or truncated. If damage is detected, the recovered articles are saved to the file name selected for the resulting file. Any additional damaged articles which Personal Knowbase is able to partially recover may be saved to a third file. A Damaged File Report is displayed with more information.
