Repairing a Damaged Data File

If you have received an error message that a data file is truncated or damaged, Personal Knowbase can attempt to repair the file.  The file repair is part of the Compact command. To repair a data file:

Close any data file currently opened by selecting the Close command from the File menu.

If no file is open, the Close command does not appear.

Select the Compact command from the File menu.

The Compact Which File dialog box is displayed.

Select the folder where your damaged data file is stored.

Select the damaged data file's name from the list box.

Press Enter OR  select the Open button.

The Save Compacted File As dialog box is displayed.

Select the folder where you want the repaired data file to be written.

Type the name for the repaired data file in the File Name edit box.

OR Select a name for the file from the list box.

You may select the same name as you did in the Compact Which File dialog box. In that case, the new repaired file overwrites the original file. If you select the same file name, Personal Knowbase asks you to verify that you want to replace the original file. Select the Yes button.

If the data file contains keywords which are not assigned to any articles, Personal Knowbase asks if you want to remove the keywords from the data file. Select the No button to leave them in the data file for now, since we are concerned that the file is damaged.

If the data file contains RTF tags incompatible with your current version of Windows, Personal Knowbase asks if you want to delete them. Select Yes.

Personal Knowbase now compacts your data file.  If damage is detected, the recovered articles are saved to the file name selected for the repaired file. Any additional damaged articles which Personal Knowbase is able to partially recover may be saved to a third file. A Damaged File Report is displayed with more information.

After the file is fixed, please check your data carefully. Sometimes affected articles may be totally or partially missing.
