Copying Text from Another Windows Application

Glossary  Return to Start  Previous  Next

At times you may want to copy information directly from your word processor, spreadsheet, database, browser, or other Windows software. Personal Knowbase can exchange information with any software which uses the standard Windows Clipboard text functions. Basic formatting information within the copied text is retained, but tables and other file structure may be lost.

To copy information from another software application to a Personal Knowbase article:

First, go into the software application that contains the information you want to copy. In that application, select and copy the information to the Windows Clipboard.

To copy the information, refer to that software's Help documentation. In most Windows software, you highlight the text you want to copy and then select the Copy command from the Edit menu.

Now switch to or open the Personal Knowbase software.

Locate and open the article you want to copy the information to.

If the article is not displayed as the current Article Window, refer to the procedure for Finding the Information You Need. If you want to copy the information into a new article, refer to the procedure for Entering New Information.

Place the mouse cursor in the content area of the article at the location where you want to copy the information.

Click on the Paste button on the Toolbar.

OR Select the Paste command from the Edit menu.

The information is copied into the Personal Knowbase article at the cursor location.

Close the Article Window by clicking on the window's close box.

Personal Knowbase asks you to verify that you want to save the changes. Select the Yes button.

TIP:Personal Knowbase also supports dragging text between software applications. If you are using another application which supports dragging text, such as MS Word, you can drag text from that application to Personal Knowbase and vice versa.

To do this, drag the text from the other application into an Article Window. If Personal Knowbase is running but not currently visible on the screen, drag the text to Personal Knowbase's button on the Windows Taskbar, holding it there until the window appears, then drop the text into the Article Window.

If you drag the text to Personal Knowbase's Index Window, a new article is created with that text inserted into the article content area. The new article is opened so that you can specify a title and keywords for the article.
