To run Personal Knowbase from a removable drive:

Insert the removable device in its drive.

From the removable drive, run KNOWBASE.EXE.

The first time you run Personal Knowbase on a removable device, you need to enter your registration information by selecting the Register Now button on the Welcome screen.

You only need to do this once on each removable device on which you install Personal Knowbase.

To Check that Personal Knowbase is Running in Portable Mode

To check if Personal Knowbase is running in portable mode, use the About Personal Knowbase command from the Help menu. The words "Portable Mode" should appear near the upper right.

Default Data File Folders

Personal Knowbase runs virtually identically from a removable drive as from a hard drive. One difference is where it looks for data files. By default, a portable installation looks for data files on the removable drive itself. You may change the folders where the program looks from the Files tab of the Preferences dialog box. Portable installations also provide an additional checkbox there, Default File Locations to Portable Drive, to indicate that the program should change these file locations when the portable drive letter changes, that is, when you move the removable drive to another computer with different drive letters.

Attachments and Hypertext Links to Files

When you copy a Knowbase data file to a portable device, attachments and hypertext links with files as link targets may still point to the files on your hard drive. If you also move the linked files to your portable device, Personal Knowbase may not be able to find them. If you change the Target field for each link to the file's path on the portable device and leave the Default File Locations to Portable Drive option set, then the drive for these files changes when you move the removable drive to another computer with different drive letters.

NOTE:You can also use relative link paths while running in portable mode. See About File Links and Relative Paths.

If you plan to use a Knowbase file from a portable installation, use the File Properties option for locating files relative to the default Attachments folder or the current data file's location. The option for using an arbitrary specified path always uses an exact folder and will not adjust to be relative to the portable drive.
