Forcing a Portable Installation

If you need to install Personal Knowbase on a portable hard drive, or in other circumstances where Windows does not recognize your portable drive as removable, the regular installation procedure may not work. To force a portable installation in these cases:

Insert the removable device in its drive.

Run the Personal Knowbase setup program with the command line switch -portable.

One way to add the command line switch is to select the Run command from the Windows Start Menu (in recent versions of Windows, you may need to type run into the search box). Browse to the folder where you have the Personal Knowbase setup program PKSETUP.EXE. Back in the Run command box, edit the target name by adding a space and then the text -portable after the filename. Click OK to run the setup.

On the third installation screen, in the Destination Folder box, click on the Browse button.

From the Select Destination Directory dialog box, use the drop-down menu at the bottom to select the drive letter of your portable device.

Click the OK button to return to the main installation window.

Click the Next button.

The installation program pops up a dialog box asking you to verify that you want to create a portable installation on a hard drive. Click Yes.

Special options for portable installation are provided. Check the boxes next to the optional files that you want to install.

All of these files are installed with a normal installation, but you may want to omit some of them to save space on a removable drive.

Note: In Windows XP and Vista only:  When running Personal Knowbase on a portable hard drive, the AUTORUN.INF file does not work the same as on regular removable drives. In this case, we do not recommend setting the installation option for Automatically start Personal Knowbase when portable drive is connected.

Click the Next button.

Click the Install button to complete the installation.

When the installation has copied the necessary files, click the Finish button.
