Portable Installations of Personal Knowbase

This section includes procedures for using Personal Knowbase on a portable drive.

Caveats

1.  Program Speed

Running from a removable drive is normally slower than running from a hard drive.  In particular, please be patient upon exiting the program and wait a moment to allow Windows to finish writing the settings file before removing the device from the computer.

2.  Backup Your Data Files

Please remember to regularly backup the data files that you store on your portable drive to a safe place on another drive or disk.  If a portable drive fails, you don't want it to contain the only copy of your data.

Notes for Users Running from a Removable Drive with Version 3.0 or Earlier

It was previously possible to run Personal Knowbase from a removable drive by copying the program files manually to the removable device.  Older versions of the program used the Windows Registry to store settings and registration information, even when running from a removable device.  These Registry entries were left behind on each computer on which you ran the portable installation.

As of version 3.1, a portable installation no longer reads or writes to the Registry.  It will not recognize information previously written to the Registry and will not leave bits behind on each computer.  When you first run version 3.1, you will need to re-select your Preferences and re-enter your registration information once.  This information is now stored on the removable device, and you will not need to re-enter it on each computer you use.
