Article Properties Dialog Box:  Attachment

Glossary  Return to Start

Allows you to specify the attachment for this article.  To save the attachment, select the OK button.

This dialog box is displayed when you select the Article Properties Command (Article Menu) or select the Article Attachment button from the Standard Toolbar.  To customize settings affecting all articles, use the Preferences Command (File Menu).

NOTE:For an explanation of attachments, see About Article Attachments.

Attachment Type

Specifies the type of attachment:

If None is selected, this article has no attachment.
If File Name is selected, the article is linked to a disk file.
If Folder is selected, the article is linked to a folder on your computer.
If Internet Address is selected, the article is linked to an Internet address (URL).

Target

Type the disk file, folder, or Internet address to link to this article.  This box is not available if the Attachment Type is None.

To locate a file or folder on your computer for a File Name or Folder attachment, use the Browse button.  The Browse button is only available if the Attachment Type is File Name or Folder.

Attachments to Relative Files

If you use the Browse button to select the Target for a File Name attachment, the absolute path and file name is inserted in the Target field.  In that case, Personal Knowbase will always look for the file in that exact location.

Alternatively, you can type a file name into the Target field.  If no path name is included in a file target, Personal Knowbase uses the folder specified for Attachments from the Files tab of the Preferences Dialog Box (File Menu).  For example, if your Attachments folder is c:\attachments, then a file with the Target of my file.txt links to "c:\attachments\my file.txt".

You can also attach files in paths relative to the Attachments folder by entering a partial path in the Target field.  For example, if your Attachments folder is c:\attachments, and there is a folder under that called "project files", then to link to "my file.txt" in that subfolder, the attachment could be project files\my file.txt .

This relative linking allows you to move your attached files without losing your links, as long as their relative locations do not change, by simply changing the Attachments folder.

Open Attachment Button

Opens the file or Internet address (URL) specified for this article.  If the attachment is a file, it opens in whichever Windows application is associated with its file type.  If it is a folder, it opens a Windows Explorer window showing the files in that folder.

If the attachment is a URL, Personal Knowbase opens whichever Windows applications is configured for that type of URL.  Most URLs open your default Web browser and send the URL to it.  A mailto: URL should open your e-mail client application.

Always Open Attachment Automatically with Article

If this box is checked, then whenever this article opens, the attached file or Internet address also automatically opens.

To cause all article attachments for this data file to open automatically with their articles, see the Articles tab of the Preferences Dialog Box (File Menu).
